Situation
Shaldon is a highly sought after place to live and is also a popular holiday destination. It sits at the mouth of the River Teign and runs along the rivers edge climbing the hillside as you head out of the village. Hunters Lodge is situated on the level in the heart of the village where pretty cottages abound on narrow roads around the village green and all the main facilities such as village shops, churches, pubs and restaurants and the highly regarded Shaldon Primary School can all be found within easy walking distance.

The sandy beach is a feature of Shaldon river frontage with dinghies, rowing boats and yachts lying on their moorings within a stones throw of the village. There is bowling on the village green, a pitch and putt and a small private zoo as well as a recreation ground and a promenade beside the river beach with seats to sit and watch the world go by or to look across the river to Teignmouth and the sea or up the estuary to Dartmoor in the distance.

Shaldon lies within 25 minutes' drive of Exeter and access to the M5 motorway, while Teignmouth is just one mile distant (or 5 minutes by passenger ferry) with its mainline railway station whilst Torquay is just 7 miles to the south along the picturesque coastal road.
Description and History
Hunters Lodge is a unique and attractive Grade II listed building dating back to 1650 with a wealth of period character features.

The property is so named as it was once the hunting lodge for the Carew family of Haccombe. Capt Carew allegedly died when his ship the Mary Rose sank with all hands on her maiden voyage. The Carew family died out in the Eighteenth Century, and their lands were eventually sold off in pieces. Lord Clifford of Ugbrooke purchased the property for his own use as a hunting lodge and it was he who added the impressive frontage and magnificent interior oak flooring as well as the York Minster Fireplace. The arched leaded light windows are certainly older than 1850, and may well have been recycled from a former ecclesiastical building within the estate. The Clifford Family was one of three families who owned the whole of Devon at that time. The present Lord Clifford still resides at the family home at Ugbrooke and many houses in the local area are still part of his estate.
