HISTORIC BACKGROUND

Historic Background of The Priory, Freiston, based on Tradition.
The Buildings of England, Lincolnshire, by Pevsner and Harris, 1964 states Freiston Priory. Built on the site of the medieval Freiston Priory and possibly incorporating some of its stonework, but mostly C16 and later. Red brick with ashlar quoins and string course. At the back, two projecting chimneystacks with diagonal shafts. The house consists of two parallel ranges, the back range C16, the seven bay W front C17, refronted C1720, with a pedimented entrance and sash-windows. Inside, C.16 dog-legged staircase with large heavy turned balusters.
Thompson's History of Boston states Freiston Priory is said to have been under the patronage of Thomas Earl of Rutland. This is likely to have been the case, on account of the connection between that family and the descendants of the De Crouns.
The site of this religious house, and the land belonging to it, were in the hands of the King in 1613. When the hundred roll was taken in 1651, this property, with all the other which was formerly held by the King, is said to belong 'to the Keepers of the liberties of England by authority of parliament'. In 1687, The Priory was again in the hands of the King, but it was disposed of shortly afterwards to the Dryden family.

White's Lincolnshire states After the Norman Conquest Freiston was given to Guy de Croun. He built a mansion here and one of his descendants, Alan de Croun, gave advowson of the church to Crowland Abbey and founded a Priory here in 1114, for monks of the Benedictine order. After being long held by the Crown, The Priory was granted to the Dryden family.
