DESCRIPTION
Chimneys is an imposing detached grade two listed family home situated close to the centre of this popular village. The house is named after its unusual group of chimneys and was built in the16th century making it one of the oldest homes in the village. The house has a rich history; its rear garden is believed to be one of the positions from which General Fairfax, the leader of Cromwell's troops, fired his cannons at Chideock Castle during the civil war in 1645. The cottage is bordered by the aptly named Ruins Lane which leads to the site of the former castle. This lane was previously also called 'meeting lane' after the thatched chapel at the top.
This stunning residence has an abundance of character features that allude to the heritage and history of the home which has been added to and renovated in Edwardian and Victorian times. There is a study with wood panelling and an open fireplace surrounded by 'Delpt' tiles. Above this fireplace, built into the panelling is a gargoyle, believed to have been from Chideock Castle dating back to the 14th century. Other period features include the glorious beamed ceiling and Victorian fireplace in the drawing room. The house has been subject to extensive improvements and renovations by the current owners to a very high specification which have made this house a more efficient and aesthetically pleasing home. An interesting and environmentally friendly improvement is that the original well has been re-commissioned so that water is automatically drawn to provide for the house washing machine and WC's. The new plumbing system also has a 'Megaflo' tank providing pressurised hot water throughout. The house has been re-wired; the owners have put in new sympathetically designed windows and a well appointed kitchen breakfast room and luxurious bathroom designed with an Edwardian feel. The spacious dining room has a lovely fireplace with a charming log burner and enjoys views of the garden. The outside of the house has recently been re-pointed, and re-thatched, providing the opportunity to live in a beautiful character home, steeped in history, that has been lovingly brought up to date. In addition to the main house is the attached stone barn which was designed to create a wonderful double garage with self contained flat above. The one bedroom first floor apartment has a separate entrance which leads up to the open plan living space and kitchen, double bedroom and bathroom. This is currently run as a profitable holiday let but could also lend itself to use as ancillary accommodation for guests of the main residence.
THE GROUNDS
Chimneys is approached by Ruins Lane to a private parking area adjacent to the garage. To the front and side of the property are level lawned gardens with paths leading to the front and side doors. The principle garden lies to the rear and is laid principally to level lawn with deep beds of mature shrubs and flowers. To one side of this lawn is an area of decking.
Immediately to the rear of Chimneys is a paved seating area ideal for al fresco dining.
