The technical design includes environmentally considered construction, very high levels of insulation throughout, orientation to maximise useful solar heating, a ground source heat pump for space and water heating (all fully time, zone and thermostatically controlled), and low energy compact fluorescent and ultra low energy LED lighting. There is full provision for the possible future installation of solar water heating panels, a wood burning stove and a grey water system using the existing well, all to further reduce energy and water use and carbon emissions. It would also be possible to install solar panels on the outbuilding roof.
The conservatory also can be used to manage the natural solar heating and ventilation throughout the building. By using the low and high level vents, having doors and/or windows open or closed, the heat and air and thus the comfort can be controlled.
The current energy demand costs about 800 per annum. If the water heating solar panels and wood burning stove were to be installed, energy costs could be halved. If the outbuilding roof was reconfigured and fitted with solar PV panels (approximately 2+Kw) it may be possible to make this house effectively zero carbon.
