HISTORY OF HEADLEY
Headley is a small village in the County of Surrey, and is situated some 20 miles, (32 km) south of London, near Epsom where the Derby is run. The village is situated on the dip slope of the North Downs at a height of approximately 600 feet, (180m).
The village is very old and is mentioned in The Doomsday Survey. The name originally meant a clearing in the heather. This refers to the acid soil conditions of Headley Heath, which encourages the growth of heather.
There has been little development in the village recently as it is part of the London Green Belt and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village succeeds in maintaining some of its old character. The land in the village is no longer farmed as it used to be, but is used for grazing for the many riding establishments in the area, and a large section is under the control of The National Trust, Surrey Wildlife Trust and private nature reserves.
The village has an active church, shop, village hall, cricket club and pub. Buses run to Leatherhead, Dorking and Box Hill with a connection available to Epsom. State schools are in Leatherhead, Walton on the Hill and Dorking but many children also attend the excellent private schools in the area. The property is also within easy access to the M25, convenient for Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
There are many community activities run by the church, village hall committee, WI etc., which use the newly refurbished village hall.
HEADLEY HEATH
The National Trust acquired Headley Heath in 1946 from the Lord of the Manor, it then being common land used by the locals for grazing their animals. By the 1930s the grass had given way to bracken, and disturbance by tanks and bulldozers during World War II coupled with the reduction of rabbits caused the present growth of trees and heather. Arresting the spread of trees and extending the heather areas are today's tasks. Headley Heath is beautiful in all seasons, with over 500 acres in which to walk, picnic etc, or simply to sit in the fresh air and admire the views.
