Location:
Weston-on-the-Green, Oxon
Description:
17th century cottage in excellent condition with 2 double bedrooms, 2 receptions and wonderful gardens
Weston on the Green is a small and pretty village just to the North of Oxford. A drive past gives little hint to its ancient origins which include the local church dating in part to the 12th century. Today it is well known by locals for some lovely architecture, two excellent pub/ restaurants, a great local store and the Weston Manor Hotel which is a business venue as well as offering 'murder mystery' and other theme nights. The access to all points of the compass is exceptional, with Oxford, London, Birmingham and Milton Keynes easily accessible.
Dating back to c.1640, Chequers End is the archetypal stone-built character cottage. In the last few years it has been extensively refurbished, including a new boiler this Summer, hence today the house offers that rare mix of character, history and modern ease of use.
Walking in through the unusually large porch (it doubles as a study) the first of two spacious, light receptions opens in front of you. Both receptions are full of character, both contain wood burning stoves in stone fireplaces - in the dining room it is, we are informed, the original fireplace. The sitting room has plenty of space for several sofas and a lovely oak floor has been fitted. In the dining room flag stones have been relaid, very much in keeping with the style of the house, and there is easily enough space for a good sized dining table. The kitchen is a recent addition and as such has been fitted with a wide range of modern units and underfloor heating. Our clients have also fitted an oak work surface and tiled the walls for practicality, and a nice touch is the Belfast sink placed in front of the window looking straight down the garden. Adjacent to this the rear hall gives access to the garden and dining room plus the bathroom, which has been beautifully fitted to include underfloor heating, a white suite with vanity unit under the sink and a shower over the bath.
Upstairs two really good sized double bedrooms offer a surprising amount of space. Both are exceptionally light due to windows to front and rear, also affording lovely views over the garden to rear. Bedroom one has ample storage cupboards but there is also plenty of room for large bedroom furniture, and in addition the loft offers further storage. Bedroom two has a delightful vaulted ceiling with exposed timber.
Outside, the house sits in a considerable plot. The garden extends to circa 160 feet (50m) in length and it has been sensibly landscaped to provide different areas for different purposes. Immediately behind the house a terrace looks down across a lawn flanked by various shrubs and trees. Further down the garden there is another area which has a summer house and paved seating area, and behind this is further lawned area with a shed, planters and various shrubs. At the bottom of the garden a gate opens onto the fields beyond and gives access to a number of bridleways. Finally, at the front a post and rail fence encloses the front garden with a hedge border to the left and several flower beds flanking ample parking for several vehicles.
